How Often Should Dryer Vents Be Cleaned?

Dryer vents should be cleaned at least once a year. That said, this number may increase based on various factors.

For instance, busier households that run the dryer more frequently – and run larger loads of laundry – may need two or three cleanings per year. In addition, if your dryer vent duct is longer or has many bends, lint buildup can occur more quickly – thus requiring more frequent cleaning.

Have a pet or two? Homes with pets that shed can cause more lint and hair to accumulate in the dryer vent and require more frequent cleaning.

Talk with an expert – like us – about your household needs and dryer use, and we can determine those most appropriate number of cleanings.

How Do I Know if My Dryer Vent Needs To Be Cleaned?

First things first, as stated above, if it has been over a year since your last dryer vent cleaning, it’s time to get one scheduled. Like your chimney, dryer vents need to be inspected and cleaned every single year in order to function as safely and as efficiently as possible.

That said, there may be cases where you may need additional cleanings. The following signs indicate that some professional help is in order, whether it’s been a year since your last cleaning or not:

Air Duct And Dryer Vent Cleaning
  • Longer dryer times. If your clothes are taking longer than usual to dry and you’re needing to run multiple cycles to get the job done, it could indicate that the vent is clogged with lint or debris, reducing airflow and overall efficiency.
  • Excessive heat. If your dryer feels unusually hot to the touch or shuts off during a cycle, it might be overheating due to restricted airflow and clogged vents. In addition, take caution if you notice your laundry room temps feel higher than normal.
  • Burning smells. A burning smell while your dryer is a big red flag and could indicate lint buildup in the vent is causing your system to overheat – which is a fire hazard.
  • Excess lint accumulation. Lint buildup in or around the dryer door or in the lint trap even after cleaning it can be a sign of a blocked vent.
  • Low (or No) Airflow. If you notice little to no air coming out of the vent outside your home while the dryer is running, it likely means there’s a blockage somewhere in the vent.
  • Moldy or musty smells. Is your laundry room – or your clothes – giving off a musty or mold-like smell? It could mean moisture is trapped due to a clogged vent.
  • Faulty dryer vent flap. The vent flap outside your home should open when the dryer is running. If it doesn’t, it could indicate a blockage.

How Often Should Air Ducts Be Cleaned?

You may have noticed that, in addition to dryer vents, we can also clean your air ducts. Air ducts should generally be cleaned every 3 to 5 years, however, as with dryer vents, the frequency of this maintenance can vary depending on several factors:

  • Does someone in your home have allergies or respiratory issues? If this is the case, you may want to clean your air ducts more frequently, possibly every 1 to 3 years.
  • Do you have pets in the home (in particular, ones that shed a lot)? Homes with pets that shed dander and hair may require more frequent cleaning, especially if the pets are prone to shedding.
  • Does anyone in the household smoke? If someone smokes regularly inside the home, it’s a good idea to clean the air ducts more often, as smoke particles can accumulate in the ducts.
  • Have you undergone any recent renovations? If your house has recently had work done, cleaning the air ducts afterward can help remove dust and debris that may have settled in the ducts.
  • Noticing any signs of mold growth in your home? If you notice any signs of mold in your home – particularly in or around your air ducts – we recommend having them cleaned immediately to prevent any health issues.
  • Have you had a recent pest infestation? If you’ve had a recent pest infestation, chances are likely that your vents have been affected – and you’ll want to get them cleaned out as soon as the infestation is resolved.
  • Have you noticed visible dust and debris? If you see lots of dust or debris around your vents, or if your HVAC system seems to be circulating more dust than usual, it may be time for a cleaning.

Remember – regular air duct cleaning can improve indoor air quality, increase the efficiency of your HVAC system, and reduce the risk of mold growth and other health issues. This isn’t a service to put off, so book with us today if you’re due!
