What Is a Chimney Inspection? Why Is It Important to Have Done Regularly?

From improving airflow systems to detecting minor damage before it becomes an emergency situation, a thorough fireplace and chimney inspection can save you time and money – as well as provide peace of mind – when it comes to your household’s chimney and venting system.

A chimney inspection is just what it sounds like – a thorough overview of your chimney and venting system. Having it done on an annual basis ensures that any issues or problems with the chimney are caught early and can be dealt with – long before they become bigger and more expensive to fix.

During a chimney inspection, one of our technicians will check for damage to the internal and external structure, as well as keep an eye out for blockages, bird nests, indentations, leaks, improper flashing sealant, and corrosion – all of which are common problems in aging or untreated chimneys.

Any worn or cracked parts that could be hazardous need to be identified – and quickly fixed – in order for the most efficient operation of the fireplace or stove. The peace of mind and benefits of having a chimney inspection make it well worth the time and cost.

Don’t wait until something happens. Call us out today to ensure your system is operating as safely as possible.

Why Do Some Companies Say Chimney Cleaning Instead of Sweeping?

Chimney cleanings vs. chimney sweepings – what’s the difference? Is there a difference? If one company is saying they offer sweepings and one is saying they offer cleanings, which one should I go with?

So, both terms essentially mean the same thing – and both are used in the industry because, depending on where you live and what you’re used to, customers use them interchangeably.

But which one is technically correct?

If we’re being official, the correct term is “sweeping.” This is because not even the most qualified chimney tech can get a used chimney sparkling “clean,” like you might your dishes after a meal. And, even if we could, there wouldn’t be a need for this, as a small layer of dirt on your chimney walls isn’t going to do any harm – and who is gonna see it except Santa at Christmastime?

Rather, chimney techs sweep the area clear of soot or creosote buildup, animal nesting materials, leaves or twigs, and any other debris that could clog things up or become a fire hazard.

All that said, we don’t care which term you use – we just want to serve you and keep your chimney safer. So, whether you say “sweeping” or “cleaning” when you book with us, rest assured, we know what you mean, and we’re here to help.

Why Are Chimney Sweepings Important?

  • Chimney Fire Prevention: Sweepings ensure combustible creosote can be removed from your chimney flue. The more creosote you have, the higher your chances are of experiencing a chimney fire – which causes significant damage and puts your system and home at risk.
  • Heightened Efficiency: You own a fireplace or wood stove because you enjoy sitting by a cozy and warm fire – but if you’re not getting the heat and ambiance you’re hoping for, then what’s the point? Obstructions in the flue cause a huge drop in efficiency, which ruins aesthetic and can cause a boost in energy bills too.
  • Harmful Fume Prevention: Smoke, carbon monoxide, and any other hazardous fumes produced by burning wood or gas need to have a clear pathway out of your home – and, if they don’t, your household members could face some serious illnesses. Sometimes, exposure to certain gases can even be fatal. Don’t take the chance – get your sweeping booked today.
  • Extended System Lifespan: Fireplaces are known for boosting ambiance, but they can also boost your home’s value too. That is…if they’re in good shape. Keep your system looking good and standing strong for the long haul by getting that necessary maintenance completed.
  • Improved Air Quality: The dirtier your chimney is, the more likely harmful pollutants will enter your living space and cause health problems. Ensure your family is breathing cleaner, fresher air by keeping your chimney in tip-top shape with every season.

We contacted D.J.Cross at the recommendation of our roofing contractor to replace a custom made copper chimney cap which had blown off during a heavy windstorm. Our initial contact was with Joe Corcoran, who thoroughly evaluated the problem with use of a drone and noted damage to the crown.
D.J.Cross fabricated a new custom replacement copper chimney cap. Michael Enright and his partner carefully and efficiently replaced the cap and repaired the crown. This necessitated the use of a bucket crane, bring careful to protect the lawn. The result is a beautiful and functional chimney cap and refinished crown.
